We are currently amidst the perfect storm.
With a growing “college-going” culture and severe budget cuts that have limited high school counselors and dramatically increased the student to counselor ratio, Corona del Mar High School is blessed with a generous Foundation that sponsors our College Programs that provides for our students access to colleges, workshops on applications and the ability to plan for a successful future.
Our website, www.cdmcollegecorner.com is a resource created to provide parents and students with the most current information in the world of college admissions. This fall, we have had over 80 colleges visit CDMHS – many of the admissions officers being the actual people who will read our students’ applications and essays.
Check back frequently for information about the admissions process, about financial aid, student-athletes, updates, etc!
Last night the PTA blessed the Corona del Mar High School parent community with the showing of the documentary film “Race to Nowhere.” This film clearly and bluntly points out the pressures that students are under now, more than ever, to be the best, to be successful, to acheive, and to be robotically perfect.
“Race to Nowhere points to the silent epidemic in our schools: cheating has become commonplace, students have become disengaged, stress-related illness, depression and burnout are rampant, and young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired.
Race to Nowhere is a call to mobilize families, educators, and policy makers to challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens.” (www.racetonowhere.com)
This film challenges the beliefs that we have grown to accept as normal – successful means high grades, high test scores, ivy league college acceptance, big houses, large salaries, etc. What about striving for happy students, motivated humans, and a joyful and fulfilling existence?
A healthy discussion was held with parents, counselors and administrators following the film. This however, is just the beginning of a thought-provoking and much needed revolution in our culture of education. Ask yourself… to where are you racing?
